Former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi ended weeks of speculation Monday afternoon to announce he has entered the contest to replace New Democratic leader Rachel Notley.

The former Calgary mayor has no past allegiance to the provincial NDP. His possible entry into its leadership race could make it more contentious, and more intriguing to a broad range of voters as it seeks to do what has never been done in Alberta, writes Graham Thomson.

Smith is trying to position herself as a voice of reason, protecting children. She would love to force her opponents to take unpopular positions.
