The political vultures are circling. A bit prematurely perhaps, but they’re here at the annual general meeting of the United Conservative Party this weekend in Calgary.

No matter what happens at this weekend’s United Conservative Party convention in Calgary, Jason Kenney will still be Alberta premier and party leader on Monday. For Kenney, this is not the end. But squint a little and you can see it from here.

It is the Alberta legislature’s island of misfit toys. A corner of the assembly where sit three former government MLAs who were booted out of the UCP caucus this year and are now so far removed from the centre of power they might as well be sitting out in the hallway. We should have seen it coming. The first inkling that controversy would dog Jason Kenney’s victory in the 2017 United Conservative Party leadership race came not during that contest but a year earlier, when Kenney ran for the leadership of the Progressive Conservatives.
